I have the honour Porter to you
herewith copy of a note which I have received
from the United States Government relative to
the case of the British subject James Ryan,
alias James Poulton, who, recently deported on
the ground of having comitted a felony, was re-
fused landing at Hong Kong and was returned by
to authorities there to San francisco on the
same ateamer which had brought him to Hong
Kung.
The United States authorities request
that the authorities at Hong Kong may be authorised
to permit the landing of Ryan at that place in as
much as he is a British subject and was on the way
to Calcutta where he was born forty-eight years

partment of State.
